Web sites for Maps and Countries: contemporary and historical
The following lists provide Web links to a variety of Web sites providing information on contemporary and historical maps available online, and about countries in the world today. Just click onto the appropriate heading to access the Web site you want.
Atlapedia Online: Atlapedia Online contains full color physical
and political maps, as well as key facts and statistics, on all
countries of the world. The **Countries A to Z** section provides
facts, figures and statistical data on geography, climate, people,
religion, language, history, economy, and more for each individual
country. The **World Maps** section provides full color physical and
political maps for all regions of the world.
Duke University Public Documents and Maps: This site contains
many sources for Federal, State and International public documents,
for contemporary and historical maps, and for computer mapping
programs. The Map Collection contains over 125,000 paper maps with
local, state, national, and international coverage, including
topographic maps, topical maps, navigation charts, road and street
maps, page-sized reference maps, and selected early 20th century
maps. We're a depository for both U.S. and Canadian government maps.
Our computer resources include the desktop mapping programs MapInfo
and ArcView as well as some spatial data to use with them. Additional
spatial data may be found in the Public Documents and Maps
Department's federal depository collection. The collection also
offers map reference programs such as electronic atlases.

Atlas of the Twentieth Century:
This site contains maps that illustrate changing trends in a variety
of categories, including Living Conditions, Government, War, and
Religion. There are essays on the Turn of the Century and the Dawning
of the Millennium. The detailed information given includes "Specific
Places and Events" and the sources and Web links from which the
information came.
Online Maps from the University of Texas Library: A multitude of
high quality maps are located at this site. Most compiled in recent
years are courtesy of the Central Intelligence Agency. That's right:
the CIA! So reap the benefit of modern intelligence gathering if you
need up-to-date maps on the Balkans, south-east Asia and other world
trouble spots, as well as less-volatile parts of the world.
Historical Online Maps from the University of Texas Library:
This site is a subset of the one above and focuses specifically on
historical maps. As you explore this site, you'll find that many of
the maps shown are from the original time period or close to it.
