Lilyturf

Liriope spicata

OK, you southerners can stop snickering right now. I'm fully aware that this stuff is planted ad nauseum down there, but around here it is not common at all. I was told by the local perennial "super-nursery" that Lilyturf wasn't hardy in Madison. Fortunately I was able to get some plants that didn't seem to be aware of this fact from a friend. This stuff is great. It grows and flowers in some fairly dense shade. It looks like a clump of grass until it gets its spikes of white flower clusters that are followed by little berries. It spreads by underground rhizomes and is said to be invasive, but mine hasn't sent anything out farther than a foot in over five years. I've found it's perfect for filling in a gap between the driveway and the boulders holding up the front yard.
