Variegated HonestyLunaria annua variegata 'Mauve'
I started these plants from seed with essentially no idea of what to expect. Although the specific name is annua, they are a hardy biennial. I grew my seedlings in small pots and then planted them in their current location in late summer last year. The seedlings didn't look at all promising at the time but I had nursed them for too long to just throw out. The leaves didn't have an interesting shape or much, if any, of the variegation you can see in the picture. The following spring they grew the flower spikes and the new leaves had more pronounced, creamy white margins. The pink flowers were followed by round, flat, translucent seed pods that give this plant its other name, moneyplant. Honesty is performing well for me in less than a half day of sun in average soil. After flowering, they were hit with a nasty wind storm that made it necessary to stake them up, but the large leaves do a good job of hiding the stakes.
