A neighbor gave me some bulbs for this unusual plant, also known as surprise lily, a couple of years ago. They send up a clump of nondescript leaves, sort of like fleshier, wider daylily leaves in the spring that later die back. Later in the season they send up flower stalks bearing these lily-like flowers. I had stuck them out of the way until I could find a permanent home for them and, because they disappeared for a year since they put off flowering that first season. By the time they bloomed the following year, I was completely surprised to see them.
