What traits do "good" services exhibit

Keep information in the registry
- Technically, all Win32 apps should do this
Event logging
- Since there's no user interface
- Demands a resource DLL with all your strings
- Can be used to trigger SNMP alerts
Publishing of performance data
- Time metrics
- Resource metrics
- Very horrendous (DLL full of callback functions)
Control Panel or MMC interface
- These are the standards that Microsoft advises
- MMC is preferred, but much more complex
- Lots of services come with little applets to control them
Meet "Designed for BackOffice" logo requirements
